today we’re meeting ferren of artcream, she writes a design and interiors blog about achieving “an affordable, designed lifestyle”, which is what we all want, right? she also has a amazing modern style, and she sells home decor items in her online shop : creamy general store. let’s meet this girl!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF + YOUR BLOG!

my name is ferren and i run artcream. i started the blog in 2013 after running blogs for other companies in the design and interiors sphere. the most important thing for me in writing the blog has been talking about affordable products and projects, as i find that so many blogs are so aspirational that they’re unobtainable.

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE BLOG?

i’ve recently decided to go freelance! whoop, whoop! i now help other bloggers and small businesses with building and growing their brands in the digital space. that can mean designing logos and assets, copywriting, or creating marketing strategies. I also help people with styling their homes and business (either in person or via email/phone). You can read a little about all of that here, if you fancy.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

originally i wanted to create something for myself where i could talk about my current obsessions and interests. i’d previously spent so much time writing for brands, and i wanted to explore my point-of-view.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A BLOGZILLA STUDIO THEME?

i first discovered blogzilla when sugar & cloth redesigned her blog. i was blogging on tumblr at that time and didn’t care for the look of my site. i loved how minimalist and clean emollient looked and i immediately chose that theme.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE LOOK OF YOUR BLOG NOW?

i commissioned a custom slider a couple of months ago and that’s definitely my favourite part of the blog now. it allows me to highlight stories for a longer time and gives the site and added touch of professionalism.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING UP BLOGS OF THEIR OWN?

yes! do whatever you want. don’t be afraid to blog from your own voice and tastes– there’s an audience out there waiting for you. when i first started blogging, i felt like there was a “right” way to blog based on what was on the blogs i liked. it caused me to write about things that i didn’t necessarily care about and, before artcream, i started and quit writing two blogs for that reason. you have to be yourself.

artcream | blogzilla studio artcream | blogzilla studio

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY GUESTS OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD THEY BE + WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

i think i’d want some inspirational people around so that i could pick their brains. maybe oprah, anna wintour, kanye west, and solange. i’d want to have a meal with several courses. breads, salads, pâté, lobster, steak, cheesecake, and lots of champagne and craft beer.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BLOGZILLA STUDIO? IF SO, WHY?

i definitely would. out of the box, the themes are very chic and will instantly elevate the look of any blog. beyond that, it’s been great to be able to work with you ladies on custom elements of my blog. i can see myself doing more customisations in the future as my site grows!

it’s been a little while on the blog here, but we’re back and excited to introduce you to erin made this! erin bakes and cooks beautiful things, but her photography is what makes us really want to try every recipe on her lovely blog. meet her!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF + YOUR BLOG!

I’m Erin. A 27 year old teacher living in Sydney Australia. My blog is erinmadethis.com and it’s where I share all of the things I make, which is usually FOOD.

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE BLOG?

I am a high school teacher by day. I teach kids about food, textiles and design.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

I loved reading other people’s blogs and thought I would maybe like to do the same. I also love to take photos so the blog was a way of developing that skill.

erin made this | blogzilla studio spotlight | erin made this | blogzilla studio

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A BLOGZILLA STUDIO THEME?

I loved the simplicity of the theme. I knew it would match any logo I created and that it wouldn’t date.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE LOOK OF YOUR BLOG NOW?

The theme allows the photos to really pop, while looking really sleek and modern at the same time.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING UP BLOGS OF THEIR OWN?

Yes! I wish I could share ALL OF THE ADVICE, but, here are a few things:

1. Reach out to other bloggers. You are nothing without the support of the blogging community. Start a face book group. Ask questions. Attend workshops. Comment, like, share. Get a mentor if you can.

2. Forget about the stats. Build it and they will come {this is something I learned from my mentor}. This is totally easier said than done, but its true. I’d be lying if I said I don’t check my stats, but that shouldn’t drive you. Your passion for blogging is what should.

3. Aesthetic is important. I personally love blogs that have a clean, consistent style. Especially in their photos.

erin made this | blogzilla studio erin made this | blogzilla studio

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY GUESTS OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD THEY BE + WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

Oprah, Lena Dunham and Brene Brown. Lena for the laughs, Oprah for the stories and Brene for the wisdom and guidance. Of course all my friends would be there too.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BLOGZILLA STUDIO? IF SO, WHY?

Yes! The theme is super quick and easy to install, they all look beautiful and their simplicity allows your content to shine.

today we want to introduce you to sarah of the blog lapinblu! she writes a lovely lifestyle blog about family, home, creativity + adventure. also you can peep her beautiful house tour on design*sponge. let’s meet her!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF + YOUR BLOG!

In a split nutshell, I’m a creative, colour & homestyle lover, picture taker & aspiring adventurer. LapinBlu is my outlet – a personal & lifestyle blog featuring edits, stories & projects around the broader topics of creativity, home & interior style, family, adventure, & lifestyle. The blog enables me to express & explore my own creative journey, as well as being a platform for sharing the people, places, products, adventures & experiences I discover, and the lessons learnt along the way.

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE BLOG?

Mainly being Mama to our 6yr old daughter at the moment. I closed my handmade shop late last year, and am currently exploring what my next direction will be in terms of the business side of things. I love (roller) skating by the sea, exploring the area where we live, and am trying to get our home organised.

lapinblu | blogzilla studio
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

I was seeking to find myself after our daughter was born & was in need of a creative outlet. Hugely inspired by Yvestown & WoodWoolStool, I was drawn to learning to crochet at the time, so I taught myself through online tutorials & blogs, which led me to more blogs, which finally inspired me to start my own. It takes time to find your voice & the blog has changed alot from the early days, but, I’ve settled into my groove in the last year or so. I love the friendships, community & experiences blogging has brought with it, and that it pushes me to try new things whilst allowing me to share the subjects I’m passionate about both inside & out of my home & my life.

lapinblu | blogzilla studio lapinblu | blogzilla studio

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A BLOGZILLA STUDIO THEME?

I was looking to refresh LapinBlu, and came across Blogzilla through Molly’s blog. I loved the simplicity & clean, fresh styles of all the themes, and it took me ages to decide which to go for (I chose Mignon)! In the end, the option for installation & bespoke additions at a reasonable cost was the ticket, as it meant I could pick a theme, but the girls would tweak it for me so it felt more like mine – a big factor for a non-tech like myself (stick that on the still to learn list!)

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE LOOK OF YOUR BLOG NOW?

I like the feeling of light & space that means it’s not too overwhelming and allows my images & colours to do the talking.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING UP BLOGS OF THEIR OWN?

Just start. Don’t be afraid of experimenting to find your style & voice in the beginning, and don’t be afraid of making changes as you go – your style & taste will naturally grow as you do. Write about what you love, not what you think other people will love. Keep going – it can feel like you’re talking to yourself for awhile, but comment on blogs you enjoy & participate in social media communities & you’ll find your tribe.

lapinblu | blogzilla studio DSC_02041
IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY GUESTS OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD THEY BE + WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

Oh gosh, it would be a big table then – I do love a gathering! Picking one right now, I’d say Grace Bonney of Design Sponge. I’m hugely inspired by what she’s created with DS, but since listening to her podcasts, After the Jump; even more so by her approach & attitude to work & life. Hmmm, what to eat…something by Jamie Oliver – his recipes always go down well at ours!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BLOGZILLA STUDIO? IF SO, WHY?

Absolutely & have done so! The themes & additional options are great, and you guys were helpful, patient, and got the job done, taking all my worries away. THANK YOU!

today we’re introducing you to lidy of hello lidy! her blog is full of gorgeous scandinavian inspired home decor + modern DIYs. we think you’ll love her just like we do.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF + YOUR BLOG!

I’m a just a quirky girl who tries to be normal (ha) with a passion for life! My husband and I have three adopted toddlers that are such an incredible blessing to the both of us!

Hello Lidy is really about finding ways to create a unique and one-of-a-kind look for your home, but that’s still attainable and livable. So we create affordable alternatives to those expensive pieces we all wish we could have for our home, but also pieces we design ourselves to suit our style as well. You can be sure to find some very basic DIYs too. Our style is very Scandinavian-inspired with both modern and vintage touches along the way!

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE BLOG?

I really only have time for my beautiful babies! We love to go for walks when the weather is nice, the zoo, go for ice cream and just eat in general. Our lives are really basic and ordinary, but I love it! We are big on adventures and investing time with family and close friends.

client spotlight | hello lidy | blogzilla studio
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

I’ve always been creative since I was young and had a wild imagination. I wanted to be an interior designer early on in life, but had no idea if I would ever be able to do it. I started my blog as a spring board to dip my toes in exploring DIYs, crafting, styling, etc. And it evolved into what it is today – little by little over the last 5 years.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A BLOGZILLA STUDIO THEME?

I loved the simple, clean and modern look. It felt it fit my personal style and aesthetic to a tee!

client spotlight | hello lidy | blogzilla studio client spotlight | hello lidy
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE LOOK OF YOUR BLOG NOW?

How straight forward and clean it is! No extra work is needed to navigate around the blog! I’m also a very visual person, so I try to make my pictures stand out as soon as you visit the site – the theme is great for helping with that!

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING UP BLOGS OF THEIR OWN?

It takes time and patience to get the ball rolling, so don’t feel defeated if your original goals seem to be going unmet. It can take years to finally start seeing your hard work pay off. Most of all, do it because you love it and because you are passionate about what you do!

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY GUESTS OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD THEY BE + WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

It’s weird, of all the intriguing people that have lived, I would just love to sit with both my Oma’s (dutch for Grandmas). Now that they are getting older and we all have less time to see each other, you realize just how important they are to you. We would most likely sip tea, eat some toast with jam and dutch cheese. And probably some sort of sweet treat!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BLOGZILLA STUDIO? IF SO, WHY?

Yes! If you are wanting a beautiful and sleek look for your blog that’s not super expensive, then Blogzilla’s got your back!

8 tips for a better looking blog

blogging / tips

8 easy tips for a better looking blog | blogzilla studio

as you know — we love seeing our themes in use, but we also wanted to share 8 easy tips for keeping your blog as clean and pretty as it can be.

1. USE PRETTY PHOTOGRAPHS

whether you’re doing a post with your own photography or using photos from the internet — readers are visual, and posts without any images won’t catch any eyes while scrolling. if you’re taking your own photos, make sure to take them in natural light, a flash never really makes anything look better.

2. STREAMLINE YOUR PHOTOS

make sure to always try to keep all your photos the same width, it creates a consistent flow and your photos will always look best at the same width of your post space.

3. CLEAN UP YOUR SIDEBAR

tons of clutter on your sidebar can make for a lot going on. we recommend minimizing the amount of items you have on there to keep it all important. spread out advertisements among your categories and archives, so it doesn’t look like one big ad page. and while blogrolls are very supportive, they take up precious space on your sidebar. if you’re insistent on doing a blogroll, we recommend a single post that you can link to from your sidebar VS having a long list.

4. SIMPLIFY YOUR MENU

we always recommend our customers try to use less than 6 items on their header menus, otherwise it can end up looking like a mess. when everything is clean and simple, your blog content will be the thing that stands out. drop down menus are the perfect solution if you’re eager to keep different post topics or subscription options on your menu.

5. PROOFREAD YOUR POSTS

spelling + coding errors can make your blog look sloppy. always double check for spelling errors and format issues, we sometimes will revise posts a dozen times to make sure it’s all perfect prior to posting.

6. KEEP YOUR DESIGNED IMAGES CONSISTENT

while it’s super fun to explore with new fonts and layouts, we also recommend trying to stick with your brand. while it’s fine to mix it up, try to make sure your fonts and colors match the rest of your blog and don’t seem like they’re out of left field.

7. DON’T RAMBLE TOO MUCH

people tend not to read super long paragraphs. if you break your copy into multiple paragraphs and separate with images spread along your post, it’ll keep your readers wanting to know what comes next. read more buttons also totally help to tease them to keep reading.

8. SIMPLIFY YOUR POST TITLES + CATEGORIES

having 10 tags and a full sentence for a title can end up looking crazy. try to come up with minimal titles that represent your post as well as you can.

today we’re featuring caitlin of pattern me pretty! she has a stylish + effortless fashion blog, where she posts about her daily outfits and inspirations. get to know her!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF + YOUR BLOG!

I started my blog back in 2012, just after I graduated college. I was working at a healthcare pr firm in NYC at the time. I constantly found myself reading blogs during my breaks, or during any opportunity I had for that matter. After some brainstorming sessions and researching blogs I really admired, Pattern Me Pretty was born. I’ve always had an interest in fashion and decided that this new found platform would be a great way to express my creative passions.

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE BLOG?

A friend from high school and I run a fashion & accessories brand called Rooey Knots. All of our accessories (headbands, clutches, keychains, sunglass cases & croakies) are made from men’s neckties. We started selling the product this summer on Martha’s Vineyard and are currently selling at a few markets in the NYC area as well as on Etsy.

client spotlight | pattern me pretty | blogzilla studio

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

I was always interested in fashion but I didn’t have a place to express that. Cupcakes and Cashmere was the first blog I ever read and that definitely fueled my inspiration to start one on my own. Once I started to write a few posts on the train home from my commute at the time, I noticed that my content ideas seemed endless. That’s when I knew blogging was something I wanted to pursue.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A BLOGZILLA STUDIO THEME?

I was in need of a little revamp and while I was exploring Etsy, I came across the Blogzilla templates. I did some further research and fell in love with every template. They were all just what I was looking for. I knew I was going to purchase one immediately, it was just a matter of which one since I loved them all.

client spotlight | pattern me pretty | blogzilla studio client spotlight | pattern me pretty | blogzilla studio

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE LOOK OF YOUR BLOG NOW?

I really like that it’s clean, refreshing and still aesthetically pleasing. I wanted a layout that was simple in design so that the content and photo’s I post are the eye’s main focus.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING UP BLOGS OF THEIR OWN?

I definitely have advice and to be honest, it’s still a learning process. It’s funny to look back on those first few months of posts, or even last years for that matter. If you’re consistent, the content you post will just continue to improve. If I could give any advice it would be to stay consistent, post content that you’re truly passionate about and to just be you. Your readers will enjoy the content you share if you’re just being yourself.

client spotlight | pattern me pretty | blogzilla studio

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY GUESTS OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD THEY BE + WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

If I could have dinner with any guests of my choice, I would have Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere and Mackenzie Horan of Design Darling. These two bloggers are one’s I’ve been following from the beginning and who inspire me on a daily basis. As a blogger and entrepreneur myself, I have so much respect for what they’ve already accomplished as young women. I find that I can relate to them in ways that make this blogging journey such a fun experience. If it were up to me, we would eat a delicious gourmet pizza with fries, because those are my two favorite things. Oh, and definitely ice cream for dessert.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BLOGZILLA STUDIO? IF SO, WHY?

Yes, without a doubt! Everything from the theme selections, the custom add-on options and the customer service is nothing short of professional. I truly enjoyed working with you girls and wouldn’t have changed anything. THANK YOU!

today we’re featuring the lovely abi from these four walls. her blog has a beautiful calmness where she shares travel, lifestyle + interior design.

TELL US ABOUT YOU + YOUR BLOG!

My name’s Abi and I live in Bristol in the UK. I blog about lifestyle, interior design and travel, and I cover all sorts: the spaces I love, the places I visit, the people I meet, the books I read… whatever inspires me or catches my eye.

WHAT DO YOU OUTSIDE OF THE BLOG?

By day I work as Assistant Editor for travel website i-escape.com, which is a handpicked collection of boutique accommodation around the world. I’m lucky because my job complements my blog really well, and I can use a lot of the skills I’ve developed at work for These Four Walls and vice-versa.  My life basically revolves around words, photos and websites!

In my spare time I also volunteer for Bristol & Wales Cat Rescue, a charity which rehomes abandoned cats and kittens. It’s a cause that’s really close to my heart, as it’s where my own feline fuzz-ball Kanga came from. I’m a mad cat lady in the making…

client spotlight | these four walls | blogzilla studio

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BLOG?

I was first inspired by the city I live in – Bristol is a really unique, creative place and I wanted to share all the brilliant design we have here. Over the months it’s evolved to encompass things beyond Bristol, too, and my readers come from all over the world. I basically combine all my passions – design, travel, writing and photography.

client spotlight - these four walls | blogzilla studio

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE A BLOGZILLA STUDIO THEME?

I needed to move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to update my blog design. I’d spent ages trawling the web for clean, stylish themes and none of them seemed quite right, but then I stumbled across Blogzilla on Pinterest. As soon as I looked at my chosen theme (Besotted), I could see how it would work on my blog. And when I found out that the lovely Blogzilla ladies could handle the entire transfer to WordPress.org for me, that just sealed the deal!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT YOUR BLOG NOW?

I love my blog now – it’s so pretty! Every time I look at it, it makes me smile. I particularly like how the design makes the photos shine – they’re the most important aspect of my posts, and they really pop off the page.

client spotlight | these four walls | blogzilla studio

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE STARTING UP BLOGS OF THEIR OWN?

Just go for it! It’s a lot of work and it can be daunting, but if you’re passionate about your subject then you’ll make it work; I’ve learnt so much through blogging, and I’ve met some fantastic people along the way. And persevere – it can be disheartening in the early days if traffic doesn’t grow like you’d hoped, but stay with it and you’ll get there. Lastly, make sure your family and friends know how much your blog means to you – my boyfriend jokes that he sees the back of my laptop and phone more than my face, but I know he supports me every step of the way and he’s really proud of what I’ve created.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY GUEST OF YOUR CHOICE, WHO WOULD THEY BE + WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?

Hmmm, that’s a tough question! There are so many inspiring people that I’d like to meet, but if I had to pick one then I’d say the author Isabel Allende – her writing is magical, and she’s done a lot for women over the years. As for what we’d eat, that’s easy – tapas. I spent a while living in Barcelona (I studied French and Spanish at university) and I love Spanish food.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BLOGZILLA STUDIO? IF SO, WHY?

Definitely! All the Blogzilla themes are beautiful, and there’s plenty of scope to make them your own through various customisations. And the support is excellent – Blogzilla took all the stress out of moving platforms, and I think I would’ve had sleepless nights otherwise!

some essential wordpress plugins for bloggers

March 19, 2015

resources / tips

some essential wordpress plugins | blogzilla studio

we get asked about different plugins a lot, so we thought we’d roundup some of our favorites for you guys!

SPAM BLOCK

if you aren’t already using a spam blocker, your comments can get OUT OF HAND without one. akismet is our favorite, it really protects about 99% of spam.

BACKUPS

you spend way too much time blogging to not have a backup plan in case it goes down. better to be safe than sorry and back your blog up weekly.

LIMIT LOGINS

another security plugin, login lockdown limits login attempts to two. you don’t want hackers being able to try as many passwords as you can, do you?!

SEO

yoast is one of the highest rated plugins for improving your blogs SEO.

COMMENTS

while we don’t use disqus, we do recommend it — a lot of bloggers use it to help encourage readers to comment by making the comment section a little more personal. it also helps prevent spam comments. let’s face it, people don’t comment as much now that you can just pin.

IMAGE OPTIMIZATION

to prevent slow loading pages, ewww image optimizer helps size down the oversized photos to make your blog load a lot faster.

INSTAGRAM

we always recommend snapwidget, because it’s free and it has the best customization settings. in 1 minute, you can throw a gallery on your sidebar or your footer. but we do wish it could link directly to instagram vs it’s own site.

GALLERIES

it costs $12, but the clean look of this gallery plugin from envato is our favorite. and you can use it on multiple pages!

once a reader has browsed down your blog, you want it to be easy for them to get back to the top. smooth scroll up has some visual customizations available and works well.

any plugins we left out that you love? let us know.
